CHARGE AGAINST DETECTIVE KIRBY.
HE FAILS TO APPEAR,
WARRANT ISSUED FOR HIS
ARREST.

Wellington, this day. When Detecbive Kirby's case waa called on abthaS.M. Courb this morning there was no appearance of tho accused. On tho application of tho Crown Prosecutor a warrant was issued for hia arrest, and recognisanses of £400 wero estreabed.
Mr Martin, S.M., addressing Inspector Pender, said ho hoped ho would nob neglecb apprehending bhe accused. This was the second occasion within fifbeen montha in which a police officer charged wibh a serious crime succeeded in evading justice. If the accused had gob away bo Ausbralia he trusbed every efTorb wou^d be made to see bhe law vindicated.
Kirby waa last seen aboub five on Wednesday afternoon. The Talune lefb for Sydney at eighb bhab night, bub the police are contidenb he did nob geb away by her, as bhe steamer was watched, and, prior bo her departure, Chief Debeebive Campbell thoroughly searched the vessel. A suggestion that he might have lefb for London from Lybtelton by bhe Tainui lasb nighb is nob credited by the police, as thab steamer was {also watched. When Kirby was first charged here police oppoeed bail, but Mr Greenfield, S.M., granted it in two sureties of £100 each on each charge. Jonep, contractor, formerly of Timaru, and Hoby, denbisb, of Wellington, were bho sureties.
