THE "PALL MALL" APOLOGISES,

Lady Henry Somerset's suit for libel against William Waldorf Astor, was settled

oub of Courb, March 16th. Astor apologised. The apology was printed in the " Pall Mall Gazette" and twenby other English newspapers at Mr Astor's expense. The defendanb also paid all bhe law costs incurred. Aafeor had said in the " Gazette " thab Lady Somerset's methods were " enough to drive anybody mad," alluding to the incorrigible vagrant and drunkard, Jane Cakebread, whom her ladyship had | undertaken to reform, bub who. had dei voloped symptoms of insanity while in her i hands.

The following is tho text of bhe apology made by Mr Astor:—"lb has been pointed out to ma by Lady Henry Somerset thab in an ' Occassional Note ' published in our issue of the 29th January last, certain remarks were made that appeared to reflocb unfavourably upon the Duxhurst Home for Inebriate Women and upon herself personally. Wo now avail ourselves of the opportunity of saying thab we regret chat anything aho'uld have appeared in these columus which could be construed into a reflection upon her abtitudo with regard to the causes of Buffering humanity or the methods by which she seeks to reclaim the inebriate to sobriety."
