AUCKLAND LITERARY SOCIETIES' UNION.

Thk annual meeting of delegates took place last evening, thero being a large attendance. MrR. McVeagh occupied tho chair in the absence of the President. The annual report road by Mr P. R. Dix, General Secretary, showed that on the whole a very satiafactory year's work could be recorded in all department-, and tho literary competition especially was a.-dis-tinct advance on previous e.'lorts. The Treasurer's statement showed.a small credit balance after payine all liabilitief*. The following office bearers were then elected, viz. :—Patron, the Mayor of Auckland ; President, Mr F. G. .Ewington; "Vicepresidents, Messrs Theo. Cooper and T. Jackaon, M.A.; Treasurer, Mr li. Mitchell; Committee, Mossrs P. R. Dix, E. L. Lees and E. E. Vaile, wish tho above officers. The appointment of a general secretary was roleguted to the Executive Commibtee, Mr Dix, who has held the" office for three years, declining reelection. MrC. E. Button, M.H.R., was appointed Governor of the Union Parliament, and the Hon. J. A. Tole was nominated as Speaker, the opening date being fixed lor Friday, let May. It waa decided to hold the debate tournament, bub nob to exclude clergymen or lawyers, as during the past two years. The literory competition was duly arranged for, and bhe junior claßsee were abolished for this year, and a system of marking for the various claseea was adopted. Ib was decided to publish the combined programme aa usual. The meebing closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman. A very euccessful year's work ie anticipated.
