Zralan'pia.—Mr Waito is loeing no time in gofctiny the ehofb down, as einco commencing a week ago a depth of 20fb has already been attained, nearly tho whole distance moreover being pormanenbly timbared up. Of course, so far only the surface cruab, so to apeak, has beon penotrated, bub within bhe last couple of feeb bhe country has tightened perceptibly, while tho blue solid rock appears to be making in the bottom. The shaft itself ia of.good proportions, measuring lift 6in x 4fb 6in inside, clear of the timbers. It in divided into three compartments, viz., two winding and one pumping and ladderway, the former measuring bhree feob by four feeb cix inchea and tho latber five feeb by four feat cix inchos. A house lisa been builb ovor tho phafb and windlass erected, which latter works very satisfactorily and should be available for sinking tio a considerable depth. One consideration in favour of the present undertaking ia that little trouble need be anticipated for some time from wabor, as, from the position of the shaft, a considerable distance will require to be Hunk before tho level of the water is reached.

Golconda. —That the desirability of sinking is being recognised by tho various companies operating on the Hauraki zone, is apparent from the fact that they are all engaged in or are preparing to carry into effecb this particular work. This Company have ab laat decided, and wisely, to continue the sinking of their shaft with the objocfc of getting in a lower level, and all hands are now busily 'engaged in constructing 6 dam ab the edge of the chamber in the presenb level, in order to dam back the water draining from the drive preparatory to commencing work in the shaft. For this purpose nil tho. necessary iron work i? being constructed for the proper securing of the Tangye pump, aad bhe manager expects to havo everything in roadineas for an active start by Tuesday morning nexb.
