He was recommended for thab distinction by Lord Roberts. The Irish Commander-in-Chief, who was then Sir Frederick Roberts, was himself a witness of the heroic deed which deserved ib. The occasion was the babble before Cabul on December llbh, 1879. The Afghans were swarmiog round the gone, and the 9&h Lancers had charged them and recharged them. One of their number, however —a very young fellow, who had been severely wounded — fell from exhaustion, and was in imminent danger of losing his life. Seeing this, ' Parson' Adams sprang from his horse and ran to his assistance, and carried the young fellow to a place of safety. As he was returning to his horse he noticed two lancers drowning in a watercourse with their horses on top of them.
