CLOSE SEASON FOR MULLET.

Sir,—ln your issue of the 3rd insb, appears a letter over the came of Masefield Bros, on above subject, which is purely an ex parte statement and contains several inaccuracies. Acloaoseapon for mullet in certain parts only of the Kaipara wan all thab " formerly" existed, the ob'jecb being to protect the fish while in shallow water where, ib wai supposed for want of better information, thoy went ab certain times to spawn. Whether the idea was correcb or not, wanb of knowledge re bhe habits of the tnulleb prevents a definite answer. The nececsiry of a close season and its limits hat lately been examined exhaustively by Sir James Hector on behalf of the Government, and doubtless the present Btate ot tho regulations is due to his report. Masefield Bros, further remark re •* the industry they started." They did not atarb the industry ot mullet canning. It is a facb that all the Masefield Bros, were minors, and thus legally incapable of so doing ab the time when the industry was in full swing in the hands of anobher firm. Ab best, therefore they can only claim second place in this respect. — I am, etc.,
