THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
To;day was the first occasion on which the new weekly half-holiday came into operation, as decided on by the conference of local bodies to be observed by shopkeaperß in Auckland city and suburbs. Tho half-holiday was very generally observed, the great majority of the shops and places of business in Auckland and suburbs being closed, excepting in Queen-street, where themajority have given notice of their intention to close on Saturday afternoon. In Karangahape Road and Newton the holiday was universally observed. Of the shopkeepers who have given notice to tho Inspector under the Act, of their intention to open to-day and cose on Saturday, eleven have their business places situated in Albert-street, four in Devonport, three in Freeman's Bay, four in Grey-atroeb, four in Karangahape Road, seven in Hobson-streot, thirteen in Ponsonoy, twenty-seven in Synaonds-streer, Kyber Pass, Newmarket and ParneU, twelve in Victoria-street, 12 in YYellesley-streeb, two in Wakefiold-streeb, and three in Wyndham-streeb. In addition to these there are 187 other shop?, chiefly in Queen-street, which hare given notice to close on Saturday. Tho above shops, thereforo, were all open today. As only 26 have given notice of their intention to close on days other than Saturday or Wednesday, it will be seen therefore that the great majority of the trades people in the community cloaad to-day.
