Dr. John Wilkins haa just received from the Hon. R, Seddon, Defence Minister, his official appointmenb under bhe Defence Acb us surgeon for bhe Auckland district of the New Zealand Permanent Militia. Dr. Wilkins ia well fitted for fche position, having acted in a similar capacity for 10 or 15 years in Victoria, being Surgeon-Major in tho volunteers.
A small cottage in Albsrb Road, Devonport, occupied by Mr Wilson, had a narrow escape from being destroyed by fire this morning aboub half-pasb eleven. Tho shingles of the roof in the riciniby of the chimney were discovered to be on fire, bub through fche energies of the captain of fche Fire Brigade and two assistants, the flames were extinguished before much damage wa9 done.
There seems some probability of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company establishing smelting works at tho old Port Waratah site, on"the Hunter River.
Constable Crean has been admitted into the Hospital, suffering, ib ia believed, from typhoid.
