AUCKLAND BAND OF HOPPE UNION.
The Foresters' Hall was well attended on Saturday evening, when the Band of Hope competition was concluded. Mr S. C. Brown presided. The programme was as follows: — Song, Thomson Thorae, Sb. John's Wealeyan, "If Papa were only Ready ;" recitation, Bertie Lorking, St. Sepulchre's, "An Appeal to the Men of* New Zealand;" song, Ernest Boulton, JL Jitt-stroeb Wealeyan, " Father, bring Home Your Money To-nigbt;" recitation, Norman H. Prior, PittBLreeb Wesleyan, "Tuscarara's Pledgo;" song, Hilton F. King, Church of Christ:, " The Stowaway ;" recitation, Frederick R. Marriott, JParnoll Wesleyan, " Bessie Bird;" dueb, Lizzie Bevan and Ruth Falkner, Church of Christ, "Beautiful Light;" recitation, Ernest Gribble, Kingsland, "The Gambler's Wife;" song, Ethelßoulton.Pitbstreet Wesleyan, " Ths Holy City ;" song, Eva Wood, Newton Excelsior, •' The Little Bow of Blue;" recitation, Charles Garratb, Church of Chriut, " The Tired Mother;" song. Nellie Powell, Chuich of Christ, " When the Swallows Homeward Fly." Pronouncing bee: Laura Gillander, Tabernacle ; Lottie Pool, Tabernacle; Lily Hamilton, Church of Chriet; Maggie Hamilton, Church of Christ ; Amy Spedding, Tabernacle. The judges for the above wero: — Music, Rev. J. Crump, Messrs G. Paque and R. Walton; elocution. Rev. A. Peters, Meaars F. M. Hay and ft. C. Whitman, and they awarded the prizeß aB follow :— Vocal solo, malea under 15, three entered, Ernest Boulton, Pitfc-streeb Wesleyan, Ist. Vocal solo, female over 16, four entered, Eva Wood, Newton Excoisior, Ist. Vocal duets, females under 12 one entry, Lizzie Bevan and Ruth Falkner, Church of Christ, Ist. Reciting, males 12 to 16, five entered, Frederick Mairiatt, Parnell, Wesleyan, latj Bertie Lorking, Sb. Sepulchre's 2nd. Pronouncing bee, tnalo and female 12 to 16, five entered : Lottie Pool, Tabernacle, lab; M. Hamilton, Church of Christ, 2nd. Ths prize for the beat) original eeeay on " How to make a Successful Band of Hope," was given.to Isabelle Spedding, T&bernaclo. Tfia judges of this competition were Messrs J; H. Upton, E. Carr, and G. Plummer. Mr W. J. Macdermotfc announced tbe following as the awards of the previous evening's contests : — Vocal eolo, females under 12 years ; four entered : Ist prize, Susie Moore, Archhill Wesloyan. Vocal solo, males over 16; four entered : Certificate, George Higgott, United Mebhodiat Free Church (the competitor having previously won a lirsb pkize at these contests); Ist prize, William Muskor, Pifst-Etreefc Wealayaa; 2nd prizo, Roberb A. Scofcb, SK Johu's Wesleyan. Vocal sight tosfe: A prize to Marion Kelly, Church of Christ. Reciting, females 12 bo 16 years J three entered: Ist, Margaret Carnahan, United Methodißt. The impromptu essay was won by Charles Swcla»i Arch HtU. Spoiling bee: George Hyatt, PM-Btree* Wesloyan, Noxb Monday the prizes will be presented to successful competitors, ana a very choice programme of prize items has been arranged.
