BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the above-named was held on Thursday ab. the office of the Councl. Present : Crs. Baibley, Bell, Hawkns, Kay and Riddell, Cr. Bell was voted to the chair in the absence of the Mayor. A circular was read from the Treasury notifying bhab £15 Us lid, balance of subsidy for 1894-5 was withheld on accountof Charitable Aid contribution for thocurrenbyear. TheTownCierk presented a circular from the Commissioner of Taxes re rateable value of the borough, which he had forwarded. His action was endorsed. An application from Mr E. H. Button for alteration of name on burgess roll was deferred, owing to approaching slocbion. Applications re works were dealt with in the usual form. The Returning Officer reported having that day received nominations from Messrs W. T. Bagob, J. G. Kay, A. Knight and E. J. White for the vacancies on the Council, end thab a poll for return of three members would, be taken on Thureday nexb, 12th met. Financially tho Treasurer reported aa foliowa : General account; cr. balance, August Bth, £102 16s 10d ; rates received, £31 Ms ; contribution from G. Johnston, Esq., £5; accounts paid, £36 5s 6d; leaving a credit balance of £103 5s 7d. Special account: Credit balance August 8,, £6 19a 7d; rates received, £6 17s 8d; credib balance, £13 17a 3d. Accounts amounbing to £12 lie 10d were passed for payment. The Town Clerk reported seven cases of absentees who could nob be found, and was instructed to proceed in legal form for the recovery of rates.
