MINING SUMMARY.

(EROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Thames, Wednesday. The mining boom continues, and is, if any- j thing, on the increase. Never in bhe his-1 tory of these gold fields has there been such an immense amount of pegging out, while prospecting is tho order of bhe day in every part of bhe peninsula. A large number ot new companies have been formed during the month, and though the success of a few of these may bo problematical, yeb it is gratifying bo notice that in every instance a reasonable amount of capital has been set apart for the development of tho properties. The Waihi, Waitekauri, and Karangahake districts are the favourite localities, bub wibhin the last couple of weeks public attention has been directed bo bhe Thames, tho resulb being that bhere also bhe marking out of new leases has been the order of tho day. Ab bhe Thames proper the mosb gratifying feature of the month has been the successful floating of the Norfolk, City of Dunedin, and adjoining properties upon the English market, especially as provision has been made for a working capital of several thousand pounds. The May Queen Company's yield for bhe month showed a substantial increase, being 7620z, valued at £2,030 8s 6d, from 800 loads of quartz, and has tended to further increase public confidence in the low levels, as the May Queen ia carrying on operations at bhe deepesb level ab present worked on the Thames. The New Moanataiari Company's mine shows a marked improvement, while the prospects of the New Alburnia, Now Wbau, Hazelbank, Occidental, Victoria, Cambria, Orlando and Waiotahi are slightly better. A nice looking reef—believed to be Dixon's lode—has been cut in the Clunes mine, and colours of gold have been seen when.breaking down the quartz. Of the new companies thab have been formed during bhia month, the Moanataiari Extended, Adelaide, May Queen Extended, and Alburnia Extended, have a particularly promising future before them, there being in each case a strong probability of something good being unearthed.

Ab Waiomo things are somewhat quiet. Operations are proceeding as usual in tho Monowai Amalgamated, with fair results, and the necessary alterations are being made to tho planb to suit tho ore.

Ab Tapu a good deal of useful prospecting work is about to bo dono, and this district should soon cooio bo bhe fronb as a gold-producer.

The Puriri districb is rapidly coming into public favour, and some of the claims recently taken up have excellent prospects. Ab Waihi, matters are unusually brisk. The return from the big Waihi Company for the pasb four weeks was £9,519 worth of bullion from 2,700 tons of ore, and the mine never looked so well as' at present, the developments during tho month being of a moat important character. The prospects of bho Waihi-Silverton are excellent, while the Gladstone has also a good future, judging by the excellonb results so far obtained. Quite a number of new discoveries have been made in tho neighbourhood of Waihi during bho month, and claims have been pegged out in every direction.

A large amount of pegging out has been done from near the Rotokohu Gorge to the head of tho Woitawhota River in consequence of what promises to be an important discovery having been made by the well known prospectore, Messrs Lowrie Bros. It ia understood thub 1,200 acres have beon secured on behalf of a powerful Wellington syndicate, who have also obtained two valuable water rights. Tho whole of the land in the vicinity haß Bince been marked out by other parties. At tho Tui and Waiorongomai the whole of the available land has been pegged out, and at the latter place in particular the industry has greatly revived.

' Taken altogether, it may safely be said that the outlook for tho whole of the district has never been 60 brighb as ab the present time, and the coming summer will witness an unprecedented boom in Waihi, Waitekauri, Karangahake, Puriri, Thames, Kuaotunu, aud Coromandel.
