TE PUKE AND KATIKATI. Rumours have been current for some time past regarding gold being found in the neighbourhood of Te Puke. It is stated that Mr Tilsley, the well-known prospector, has found some large bodies of auriferous quartz, with splendid water pdwer available tor their development. The property, which consists of 500 or 600 acres', has been purchased by Mr M. Fleming, one of the late owners of the Earl of Glasgow mine, Karangahake, on behalf of a Wealthy syndicate, who intend to develop its resources with the advantages that an ample supply of capital can offer.' GRANTS FOR PROSPECTING, Etc. The Local Government Bill makes an important alteration in the law as regards expenditure of grants to assist prospecting and bhe mining indusbry generally. Ab present auch grants can only bo expended by the local authority concerned, in accordance with the directions, and under the supervision of the Minister of Mines, but the Bill proposes to place the grants directly in the hands of the Councils, to expend at bheir own discretion, subject) to certain regulations. Ib is anticipated this method will work far better than the regulations now in force. MINING AREA EXTENDED. On account: of the large areas taken up for mining purpose ab Te Aroha and its vicinity, the Minister for Mines considers ib advisable bo extend the boundaries of the Hauraki mining district, and accordingly has caused the following notification to appear in the Gazette echedule:—North Island: Hauraki mining district: All thai area in the Auckland land district bounded towards the north-easb generally by the ocean and Tauranga Harbour, from Cape Colville to the Waipawa River, thence towards the south-east generally by that river by Whakamarama No. 1 block, and Te Parapara stream to its source, thence by a righb line bo trig station No. 909 at the southern corner of Whakamarama No. 1 block, and thence by Mangatotara Noa. la, 1 and 3 blocks towards tbe south by Okauia No. 3 block, and towards the southeast generally by the left tank of the Waihou or Thames River, the Firth of Thames and the Hauraki Gulf to Gape' Colville, the place of commencement, save and excepting sections Nos. 11 and 18, block I.; section No. 19, block VII.; sections No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. 7, 8, 9, 20, and 28 block XI.; sections Nos. 12, 13. 15, 16 and 22 of block XV., Hastings survey district, comprising an area of 3,295 acres, i This means that the boundary which now goes just beyond Waiorongomai will follow the lefb bank of the Waihon River beyond ivthe Gordon settlement, then cross country Kto beyond Katikati, and thence by sea P_ound by Cape Colville. The large area thus taken in will only apply to Crown lands, and will save people desiring to take up mining leases the trouble they are now pub to owing to land being beyond the mining area. The alteration in boundaries will also enable the Wairere Falls at Gordon settlement to be utilised as motive power for mining purposes.
