NARROW GAUGE RAILWAYS.
Melbourne, August 15,
The Standing Committee appointed to inquire into the narrow gauge railway system is sitting. The enginneer-jn-chiaf, the engineer of the existing lines, and Profeseor Kernob, an engineering expert, are all adverse fco the system, and in their evidence said although the initial cosb of the narrow gange would be less the aggregate ooab would be greater than the broad gauge system. The Utter could be constructed at so small an additional cost that ib would be a mistake to break the present gauge to secure a email economy. The narrow system might be less costly ab first, but as the country developed the broad would certainly be more profitable. The economy in connection with the narrow gauge was not so much with regard to the gauge as lighter rolling stock and permanent ways. They advocated that the preaent Hnea be
extended in the shape of lighb lines, but that the gauge be nob broken.
