Drunkenness.—A fireb offender was -Cautioned, and ordered to pay 2s 6d cnb hire. Shop asd Shop Assistants Act.—Three charges againsb J. \V. Knighb for alleged broaches of the Shop and Shop Assistants Act, were adjourned until to-morrow.
Neglecting to Clean Private Yards. —Thomas Calvert pleaded guilty to a charge of neglecting to clean a private yard in his occupation in Alberb-stroeb. Defendant was fined 5a and 9a costs. Ah Quong, W. C. Fong, and Ke Hong pleaded not guilty to charges thab they neglected to clean a private yard in their occupation in Wakefield-streeb.—Mr Thos. Quoi acted as interpreter.—Dr. King, Medical Officer for the city of Auckland, deposed to visiting the yards of the three defendants. He found decayed vegetables, oyster shells, and refuse intho yards, and the drains were defective.—Evidence was also given by Mr Goldie and his assistant, J. Townley. The last named stated thab ho had visited the yards again this morning. Ah Quong'e was nob yeb clean, bub Fong's and Ka Hong's were in order. The three Chinese defendants gave evidence. They stated that) recont heavy rain bad made their yards dirty In answer to a question by Mr Goldie each of the defendants stated thab the domestic refuse from their premises was put in bags and taken away by Chinamen to be pub in their gardens.—Mr Northcroft. addressing the defendants through Mr Quoi, said he was asked by defendants to believe thab Dr~ King and Mr Goldie and his aasistanb were perjuring themselves. The defendants did nob keep their yard clean according to our ideas.—Ah Quong waa fined 10s und costs 255, and the two other defendants were fined 10a and costs 235, or in default 14 days in Mount Eden.
Adjourned.—A charge againat Richard. Philpob. alleging thab he did forcibly entei on land in Yarborough-streeb, Ponsonby, wns further adjourned for eight days. Alleged Threatening Behaviouf,. Two young men named Henry Evans and George Evans were charged with threatening behaviour in Queen-streeb on 10th August, whereby a breach of the peace was occasioned.—Mr Cotter appeared ou.behalf of defendants and pleaded nob p-ailty.— Wm. Miller, a seaman on H.M.s. 'Pylade?, deposed to coming out of the Clarendon Hotel on Saturday night. He saiv the defendants standing at the corner o'/thestreeC. Defendants came over to witness and picked up a row with him." One of defendants struck witness, and the other gob hold of him. A tussle ensued, and (witness was shoved through a window. lia cross-exam-ination witness said he wna sober. H© was not quite sure whether he marked one of the defendants. He might have done go in the tussle when he defended himself. —Arthur Ernest Lay cock (of H.M.a. Pylades), Thomas A. Calderwood (cabdriver), and Constables Bailey and Oliphanb gave evidence in support of the charge.—Henry Evans, one of the defendant?, cavo evidence. He denied that ho struck Miller. He deposed that he was walking behind Miller, who turned round and struck him on the nose.—George Evans corroborated the ovidenca of his brother. Ho could nob say who broke the pane of glass. Witness was not carried through tho pane of glass with Miller. tYitnees was not struck, and he did no. stride anyone.— Arthur Hearltng (currier), who was in the company of defendants on Saturday nighb, deposed that Miller struck Henry Evane. Geo. Evans gofc between them. There was a row between the sailors, and Crash went the window. The two Evans were in the middle of the road when the window crashed. —David Nolan, labourer, also gave evidence for the defence.
