A HOSPITAL DEMOLISHED,

GENERAL ATTACK AGAINST CHRISTIANS. .

Shanghai, Augusb 8. Yesterday a mob attacked tho British

and American mission houses in Fathan, near Canton. ThehospHal was demolished. Some of the residents fled from the city. A Chinese gunboat had been ordered to proceed bhere. The Vegetarians number 12,000, and are well armod. They intend to destroy the whole mission in Quang Tang province and eject the missionaries. It is reported that an outbreak against the Christiana has taken place in Ching Chow, Hupoh Taiping, and Antiur. Two hundred Sikah troops stationed in Hongkong eacort Mr Manstieid to Kucheng. The attack was organised by officials. At a public meeting resolutions were carried denouncing the connivance of officials, and complaints were made of the inadequate moans possessed by the British Governmenb to protect their subjects in the Ea«b, and demanding that pressure bo brought to bear on.the Chinese Government to etop outrages. Tho American Consul in Foochow reports that be has obtained the names of the leaders of the massacre.
