An inquest was beld at JQukerenui on Mouday last to inquire into tha circumstances surrounding the death of Thos. Broome, aged 76, gumdiggor. The evidence went to show that deceased had been ailing off and on ovor two years, suffering from consumption, and latterly gob; ho bad that he was unable to work. Deceased was a widower, bub had no relatives iv New Zealand. He served in the 58th Regiment, and was engaged in the New Zealand Maori War. The jury returned a verdicb " Died from natural causes," with the following rider added :—" Thab it is a disgrace to New Zealand that an old soldier died in obscurity, being neglected, and never getting any uesiatancu from the Government) for his sorvteos,"
