" JOHNFAWCUS._ TO THE ELECTORS OF AUCKLAND GITY.— Ladies and Gentlemen.—ln response to a numerously signed requisition of the Electors, I have consented to become a Candidate for the honor of representing you in Parliament, for the vacancy caused by the resignation of the Right Honorable Sir George Grey. X.C.8., P.C. If elected you may rely on my devoting my energies, as in the words of the requisition; "to the advancement OE the interests of Auckland, the North, and the ! Colony generally, irrespective of party. — ' yofra-althfally. J-.M. SHERA. O~THE ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF AUCKLAND, Ladies and Gentlemen,— I In response to the invitation I have reI ceived from a large number of citizens. I beg I to announce myself a Candidate for the honour of representing you in the Parliament of New Zealand. I shall take an early opportunity for placing mypolitieal "views before you. In the meantime, I submit the following general statement of my opinions :— 1. I desire, and shall strenuously advocate, the extension of settlement in the country, the development of its mineral resources, and the improvement of tho means of communication ; but, I am opposed to increasing the public debt of the colony, and to the increase of taxation, "which must inevitably follow: further borrowing. -•""'•' a. I believe that legislation should be undertaken for purposes of general utility only, and nbl—except in cases of manifest oppression—for any personal or,clas3 object. 3. I am opposed to the interference of the Executive Government with matters of local concern, and believe that the machinery of Government is-becoming too cumbrous for the free developmentof industry and enterprise. 4. I am prepared to support a policy for the advancement of the colony, commercially and socially, and would offer io factious opposition to any measures conceived in a broad and liberal spirit; but I claim that any measures proposal! in Parliament should receive full and careful consideration, and not pasi into law without ai-tile proof of their public utility. I have the honour to be. : > Yours faithfully, RICHARD MONK. A UCKLAND CITY ELECTIO* " ""*• To Messrs Smith. .Tones and Robinson, acting for the 15,330 Electors of the City of Auokland. Gentlemen.—The numerously-signed Requisition which you have placed'in my hands requesting me to bo noi-ninnted for.the seat vacated by the resignation, of Sir George Grey, has surprised nic beyond measure.- To succeed to the greatest Statesman that ever crossed the Line would; indeed,.ho a great honour, but lay duty to the born,'millions precludes the possibility of my acceding: to your request. Had the lieqiii3ition been placed in raj- hands before J made the new departure in my business, namely, the Footballers Brand of Ready-made Ulothing, I should havo certainly given it my serious consideration and most probably have placed myself entirely in your hands, but this lias now become impossible. And for this reason, that since the introduction of my unparalleled Brand of Ready-made: Clothing my time has been so fully occupied with my Own business that I have little or, no time to attend to the business of other people. While declining the honour you desire to confer upon n\e. let me o._sure you that. I am sensible of your great kindness and discrimination in selecting me as a fitting person to serro you, but permit me to say that I should prefer to serve you outside than inside the I House of Parliament. I To tho ladies who have so numerously signed I tho requisition I feel especially erateful as 1 take it to bo art-cognition of their appreciation of my good habit's.'Thanking you for the honour you havo done me I must respectfully though reluctantly anc regretfully decline to be nominate)* for the seat vacated by our illustrious citizen Sir Georg< Grey,. x - I have the honour to be Gentlemen. - Your most obedient servant - ;. J. H. DALTON. "" 210 Queen-street, July, 189.,
