TARIFF.
■ ■ Sydnky,". June 4. In the Assembly the Treasurer introduced a resolution to give effect to the alterations in tariff foreshadowed in the Budget. The duty on butter is reduced from 2d to id per lb. The duty on agricultural and dairy produce and fish" remains till June 30. next year. The permanent tariff fixes the duty on beer at from 6d to od per gallon; wines, 5s per gallon ; spirits, 14s per gallon ; tobacco, 3s per lb." Mr1 Reid, speaking to the financial resolutions, said an opportunity'woutd be given members to propose amendments to the tariff, but tjie Government would not bind themselves to accept them. They were averse to applying the .closure, but if necessary they would dp so. I Sir G. R. Dibbs said the Opposition intended tojfight every: item, and dared the Government to apply the closure. He moved an amendment that the existing duties be continued .till 1900. The debate-is still going on.
