" Ab the Police Court, W. Knox w&s convicted of stealing a watch and chain, the oroperty of John Cunningham. Afber considerable evidence had been adduced, Knox pleaded guilty, and showed where; the watch was.. He was sentenced bp four months' hard labour ab Moanb Eden. Frederick Cockheaß, charged wibh stealing washing from Mr Day's clothes line, was acquitted. None of property found in possession of the accusod being sworn toy the Magistrate said he must discharge him.;; Petty robberies have take place recently all round. Only a few days ago thieves entered a kitchen knowing bhe man was away, helped themselves to a good feed, and left plates, knives and forks under the hedge. '; , yv' . Great proerress is being made with the gas works ab Hamilton, and ere long workmen will start laying the mains. I understand that large numbers intend using gas.' . ' ' ;;, "" : ~ '
