The usual weekly' meeting .of the Athenaeum Literary and' Debating Society was held last night ab the Y.M.C.A.,Mr TV. B. • Ley land. President, being in the chair. The business of the evening was a lecture by Mr W., H, Carter, on •"The Life of a Planet," the . Earth, to wit. Mr Carber Jraced in an interesting manner whabyhe thought to be the history and formation of the earth from creation to the present time, and gave by analogy with Mars, the Moon, and other planets, his idea of the- earth's future form. The . lecturev.waß amply illustrated by" charts, and evinced considerable research. Some of the members differed from the, essayist> in; his theories, but all thanked him for his i trouble, : and the valuable • instruction he *bad imparted.. Nest Tuesday evening,-in place of the subject dqvyn in; ■ the Society's syllabus, Mr. E. W.* Burton; will give an address on " The Limits; of State .Intarfer-" ■pßrTaUyertUwoenb' irf'thiB viaauo.
