OSCAR WILDE ARRESTED
SEQUEL TO THE LIBEL CASE. SENSATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS. London, April 6. Oscar Wilde has been arrested. Taylor has also been arrested, and will be charged in conjunction with Wilde. The latter'a name has been withdrawn from the playbills of London and American theatres. After the warrant had been,issued for Wilde's arrest, the police detained three essential witnesses. Oscar Wiide publishes a letter stating that he abandoned his case in order to avoid placing Lord Douglas in the witness-box. Lord Douglas and two men remained in conference with Wilde ab the - Viaducb Hobel, Helborn, for Beveral hours after the trial, and lunched togebher in a private room. Subsequently bhey drove to bbc bank, where Wilde wibhdrew a large sum of money. He was then losb aighb of until arrested" in the evening at an hotel in Sloane-strcet. The warrant for tbo arresb of Oscar Wilde was issued ab tbo instance of tbe Treasury.' • Although Wilde's name has been removed from all playbills, tboabrical companies continue to play his pieces for the present. Wilde, in his letter to the press explaining' his reason for abandoning his case, states he was willing to bear ignominy in order to avoid calling Lord Douelrs to give evidence against his father, but says bhe son was eager and quite willing to enter the box.
