SOCIETY OF ARTS EXHIBITION.

The preparations for the opening of bhe arb exhibition, in the Choral Hall are approaching completion. Yesterday and today the Hanging Committee have been busy placing the pictures received. The collection of paintings comprises a larger number of works than have ever been broughb bogetber by tho Socieby, and bhe quality of the work shows in many respects a decided improvemenb on pasb exhibitions. In both water colours and oils bhe exhibition is sbrongor bhan before, and bhe canvasses, taken all round, are larger. In,addition to the ordinary exhibits there is a fine collection of pictures loaned for the occasion, which add to bhe attractiveness of the exhibition. Mrs Macfarlane, of Onehunga, has lent her collection of pictures, valued at over £700, to the Society, and others, possessed of paintings, have been similarly obliging.. In .connection with bhe cataloguing of .the works we are requested to sbabe bhab the Hanging Commibtee have had a great deal of trouble through several of the exhibitors forwarding their pictures wibhoub the particulars regarding them which are required by tho regulations. Unlesa these exhibitors wish their works to be represented in tho catalogue by a mere number and a blank, bhey should ab once rectify their mistake. As usual bhere is a phobographic exhibition in bhe anto-room. Oiir own local club is of course besb represented,, although the specimens of its Work are .somewhat.lees numerous than lasb year. The only obher large club thatlai any photos on view is that of Wellington, there riot having been time to obtain collections from Dunedin or Christchurch. As has already been stated eleewhere His Excellency the Governor will bo'present ab the, conversazione in bhe Choral Hall to-morrow evening to open the exhibition.
