DEFENCE ITEMS.
PRIZES IN RECENT SHOOTING
COMPETITION

Wellington, this day. The following defence items should be of interest. The submarine expert, QuarterMaster Sergeant John Parrel!, late of the Royal Engineers, leaves England in February for the colony. He was previously stationed at the Bermudas, and comes here highly recommended by Capbaiti Carr, Chief Inspector of Submarine Mines of the Royal Engineers, as being well up in electrical and torpedo work. The 'amount allocated some time ago for shooting prizes in the Permanent Artillery and Torpedo Corps in the colony was £29 14s 4d, to be divided amongst the corp3 ab Wellington, Auckland, Lyttelton, and Port Chalmers- The competition in the Auckland districb, which book place recenbly, resulted as follows :—Gunner J. Connolly, 80 poinbs; Gunner S. Bannon, 78 points ; Gunner T. Bonner, 72 points. There are also medals for the lower, scorers.
