THE N.Z. SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

On Monday afternoon, the 7th inst.. tho usual quarterly Council meeting of the above was held in tho office of Messrs Wilding, Hampson and Co., Custom-street East, the Chairman, Mr H. Wilding, J.P., presiding. Thero was a good attendance of members of the Council, and great interest was shown in the proceedings. The Secretary reported a credib balance of £40. The Chairman menbioned thab since its last meeting bhe Council had loat one of its best members by tho deabh of the late Dr. Kenderdino. In his usual report the Chairman epitomised the transactions of the Society for # the past quarter, specially referring to 13 cases which had come before the Committee. Of those it had only beerdeemed wise to take two into Court, y__., the well-known case of bhe Pepler'a at Pukekohe, and one application foe a maintenance order. Many of the eVes dealt with entailed a large amount of labour, in the form of visitation, enquiries and correspondence. Of course the bulk of thisYduty fell on Miss Porter, the energetic visitor. Grateful thanks were accorded to. the Police Department and to the Charitable Aid Board, for the invaluable assistance rendered to the Society by them. It was also poinbed oub. that relations of, a most friendly character existed with the following institutions . and bodies, viz.:—Mrs Cowies' Home, the Salvation, Army, and tho Helping Hand Mission.

A long and interesting discussion then took place as to the besb means of dealing with the large and ever-increasing number of young (and in many instances presumably respectable) girls who nightly promenade the streets and wharves. Among other suggestions, ib was remarked that th'j-e in charge of religious and other meeting? for the young largely conduce to the presenb bad state of affairs by permitting ?ach meetings to be kept up far too late. Ultimately, it was left in Mr Wilding's nands to inquire into the existing laws of other colonies and States bearin_r on this subject, and reporb to the next meeting, with a view to the possible introduction of suitable legislation on bhe subject. The Secretary was instructed to summon the annual meeting for Monday the. Ist of April.
