THE BOARD OF EDUCATION.
A meeting of the Auckland Education Board was held to-day, when there were present Messrs Udy (Chairman), Wilding, Muir, Woodward and the Rev. Wrßatee. Appointments.—The Board agreed to make the following appointments :—Mr F. Blackmail, second assistant at Farnell School, to take charge of the Otorohanga •School ; Mr A. W. B. Davis (Ponsonby), to the Whangaripo Valley School ; Mr A. J. T. Judkins, to Matahura, and Mr W. Brown to Mangahura. Alarge number of recommendations for appointments were also made to School Committees.
Tarring and Sanding.—On the motion of the Chairman it was agreed fchabthis work be done in the same way as laab year, and that Che Board's architects be instructed to inspect, it when completed. ' Napier and Nelson Stkketj. Schools.— The question of painting the6e schools was referred to the architects,- ,
Ponsonby.—;The question of enlargement of. the Richmond Road School was deferred bin a full meeting of. the Board. ,
. Maketu.— It was agreed to instruct the architects to have two rooms added to the teacher's residence ab.this place.
Aratapu.—-After some discussion on the subject) of the remoyal of the Aratapu school,, on the motion of the Chairman the j Board,decided.to instruct the architects to \Jiave this school removed some 2OOft, to site 'ijadicated by the Committee. ■-■■-.• . Alexandra. —It was decided to have this school repaired instead of building a new school. East Tamaki Teacher's House.—With reference to this matter the successful tenderer, Mr Ellinghatn, wrote stating that owing to a mistake having been made in connection with his tender, be wished to withdraw from the contract, and asked that his deposit be returned.r-The Chairman said there was no doubt in his mind that) a mistake had occurred, but the Board had not the power to return the deposit as the applicant had neglected to withdraw his tender before acceptance. Ib was an unfortunate difficulty, and there was noway out of ib.—Mr Muir moved that Mr Elliogham be informed that his deposit would be forfeited, and also that, fresh tenders be called for the work.—Mr Bates thought thab ib was wrong for Che Board to do anything that they were not morally justified in doing?, and that if the Board could possibly return the deposit they should certainly do so.—The Board ultimately agreed to Mr Muir's motion.
Bemuera.— The tender of Mr Samuel White (£39) for improvements to schoolground ab Remuera, was accepted.—There were aix tenderers, and Mr White's was ,fclie lowest. * Whaugarata, ••- Seven tenders were
raceired for thei co»trac6 of making an ad« ditioii, totho L school ab this place, and the tender of Messrs Grayson Bros., Bridgestreet (£IBB 15s), waa accepted. Teachers' t Returns. — The Secretary draw, attention to the remissness of duty shown by'a large number of the teacher* in filling up their monthly certificates. Ia many instances the information asked for with reference ta the dates of the beginningand end of • the school holidays had nob been supplied, and the consequence tras thab when a new teacher was appointed during the holidays', there was nothing to show him on what date the school was tobe re-opened. In other cases the answers given wgre .misleading.—The mabter was deferred till a future meeting to see if any improvement took place in the certificabes supplied by bhe teachers. ■: , ' "■
