PARNELL.

The ordinary meeting of the Parnell Borough Conncil'was held lasb evening, all of the members being present. Half-Holiday.-A letter waa received from the Mayor of Auckland intimating that the Conference in terms of section 9 of the Shop and Shop Assistants Act), would take olace ab the City Council Chambers on Friday, the 18th inst. It being decided to take an expression of opinion as to which day should be chosen for the half-holiday, Mr Wright moved and Mr Whitley seconded, " That Saturday be the day for tho half-holiday."—Mr Briggs moved as an amendment, "That the Council vote for Wednesday."—The amendment was lost and the motion carried.—Mr Pollard waa appointed delegate to the Conference. Rates.—Messrs Russell and Campbell, solicitors, wrote on behalf of Mr J. M. Brigham, with reference to the latter's rates. They pointed oub that charges for water-closets had been made to Mr Brigham for tho lasb five years,-apparently without any authority, and thab Mr Brigham claimed a refund of money overpaid to the Council, unless his raSas were made on the valuation of £120 instead of £160.—1t was agreed to reply fchab the Council had no power to accede to the requesb. . Miscellaneous. — A letter from Mr Gabriel Lewis, complaining of the state of the footpaths in Garfield-sbreeb and Cleveland Road, was referred to the Streets Committee. Mr Mcßride's tender of £2 10s each for twelve coats for the Fire Brigade was accepted. The .Sinking Fund Commissioners recommended that all money paid for drainage oub of general fund be refunded from drainage loan account, and asked thab certain returns be furnished them with reference to the water and drainage loan and water loan accounts since 1882.—1b was agreed to do as requested in both instances.
