SCHOOLS BREAKING UP.

ST. BENEDICT'S SCHOOL, NEWTON,

The " breakirig-up" ceremony yesterday afternoon in connection with St. Benedicts Roman Catholic Day School. Newtcn, was the occasion of a Very pleasanb gathering, the Rev. Dr. Egan and Father Downey, 0.5.8., and many of the parents being present to witness" the proceedings. Ine school has achieved excellenb results during the year, thanks to the careful tuition ot the children.by the Misses Cbffey, and very nearly the whole of the scholars passed tne recent) examinations, the certificates having been distributed oti Thursday. Yesterday afternoon the children went through a very creditable entertainment, pretty choruses being sung.by them, besides.other items. A pleasing feature of the gathering was the presentation of an address and a handsome silver sovereign-case to the Rev. Dr. Dean. The souvenir .was engraved witn the.reverend doctor's' initials. /The presentation was made by Miss Ida Reynolds. Dr. Egan returned thanks in warm terme, and In doing so spoke in the highest terms of praise of the exceedingly capable manner in which the Misses Coffey had conducted the school during the year. > An afternoon party followed, ab winch the young people greatly enjoyed themselves.

The annual exhibition ot work and dv tribubion of prizes in connection with totFrancis de Sales High School (Sb. In Sb. Jbseph's Bchool the following extra prizes wore presented after the certificates had been distributed : —0. On Thursday and Friday theannual breakups of the schools—eighteen in number—of the above Society have been celebrated. Ab mosb of the assemblies there was a considerable attendance of parents and friends. At each school satisfaction was expressed by the visitors present ab the improved manners of the children and their fondness for their school and their teacher?, and, as a natural result of such, good attention and progress in their lessons. The total average attendance in the eighteen schools numbers 450, and to one-third of these useful prizes in books and toys were awarded. i

The presentation of prices and certificates to the children attending the Mount Edon tiublic school • took place yesterday afternoon ab the Mount Eden Congregational Church, View Road, which had been kindly placed ab the disposal of the headmaster, by the church authorities. Mr G. A. Buttle (Chairman of the School Committee) presided. The headmaster, Mr A. Hosking, read the BChool reporb, showing the roll number to be 536, and the average attendance lasb quarter 453. In the corresponding quarter of 1884 the number was 137, showing that an increase of 316 has taken place in the averages attendance since thab year. The headmaster said that of 42 boys holding scholarships ab the Grammar School four—Fen wick, Prideaux, Shepherd and Maurice Gray—came direct from the school/ while three others were flrab in their respective form lists. Mr Buttle made a few remarks bo the children, and bhen made the presentations to the successful recipients.' The following is the prize list:— Class X. A concerb was given in the Otahuhu Public Hall on the evening of Thursday* to celebrate the breaking up of the public Bchool for tha holidays. The hall was crowded to excess, and an excellent programme was gone through, followed by a dance.

MOUNT ROSKILL SCHOOL.

The annual picnic of tho Mount Roskill School was held yesterday in Mr Mays' grounds, beside the Mounb Roskill Hillj and proved a Very enjoyable affair. In the afternoon the grownup folk attendei in large numbers, and, wibh the school children, formed on the lawn a .very pic* turesque scene. Refreshments of various kinds were liberally provided, and sports and games freely indulged in, the inoin j fcers of the School Committee, as usual, doing everything, together with Mr J. W. Carr and the teachers, to make the youngsters enjoy themselves. QUEEN'S ""COLLEGE.

The annual "breaking-up"in Connection wibh bhe Queen's College, Upper Queensbreeb, book place on Thursday, _whon the prizes won ab tho athletic sports were distributed by MrsMcArbhur, and the College certificates by bhe principal, Dr. McArthur. The principal's reporb stated that bhe College would be bransferred bo Ponsonby, where Dr. McArbhur has leased tho buildings known as the Ponsonby College. The school honour list is as follows :—

On Friday the 14bh inst., the above school was inspected Gy Mr Petrie, the Chief Inspector, and the the children passed a very satisfactory examination.

Last evening an entertainment' in "aid of bhe prize fund of the Parnell Public School was held in St. BonKyentura Hall, the attendance being "a 'very^'Mge one. Tlie Chairman of fhe School Committee, Mr N. W. Pollard, opened the proceedings. Several excellent pnrb songs were given by the children, led by Miss Asbley, one of the teachers. Songs were given by Mrs Cooper, Mrs Pollard, Miss A. Twiname, Mr Fort, Mr Rainger, and Miss E. Taylor ; and recitations were given by Miss L. Cooper, Mr Parr, besides dialogues and soriga by the pupils. Several tableaux— •• Queen Catherine's Dream," " You Dirty Boy," and "Pulaski's Banner" were effectively displayed.

The annual gathering of the pupils belonging to the Misses Rogers' boarding and day school, Parnell, was held lasb Thursday evening, when there was a large attendance of parents and friends at the echoolroom. The exhibition of drawing showed thab excellent progress had been made by the pupils in that branch of instruction. An interesting programme of music, recitation, etc., was gone through, and during the evening prizes were distributed to the successful scholars.
