CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the City Schools Committee was held lasfc evening, and was attended by Messrs J. Blades (Chairman), Fairs, Squirr'oll, Tudehope, Julian and Farrell. Attendance.—The , Chairman reported tbab the number on the roll of the city schools at date, was 3,008,. as compared with 3,044 ab last meeting, and bhab the average attendance" during the past fortnighb was 2,640 as compared with 2,689. - Chapel-street School. — The Board notified the Committee tbab they could not accede to the labter's request for the enlargement of tho Chapel-street *scbool. They proposed to open a separate school, after the coming holidays, in the building known as the No. 2 Mission Hall, Freeman's Bay, which would be temporarily rented for the purpose.—The Chairman said the facb of opening another school would nob relieve the pressure'in ChapelBfcreet school in the least. In February nexb they would have to face the*same difficulties over again.—Mr Julian objected strongly to tho suggestion made by the Board,—Mr Farrell thought that the opening of a new school in the neighbourhood mighb have the desired effect, and ib would be as well to leb the" matter" proceed as the Board had suggested.— The Chairman said if ib would relieve the pressure in Chapel-streeb he would be in favour of it, bub ib would nob.—Mr Farrell thought the intention was to relieve the pressure.—The Chairman said if any epidemic broke oub in thab school, which was nob unlikely considering the way in which the building is ab present overcrowded, bhe responsibiliby would rest with the Board of Education. There were now about 250 children couped up iv a building which should not properly hold ab bhe mosb more than 150. Ib was a disgrace to bhe. city.—The Committee subsequently agreed to protesb againsb the decision of the Board fco open another school, and adhered to its former proposal with regard to the enlargement of the Chapel-streeb school. Wellesley-street School. —The headmaster of this school sent on a complaint received by him from Liout. Clsmens, alleging thab the boys of the school were in the bubib of throwing .stones on the Orderly Room of the Drill-shed. Tha letter was referred back to the head teacher.

Thk Holidays.— Permission was granted to the headmasters of the Napier-streeb and Chapel-street Schools, to close their schools on Friday, the 21st inst., bo as fco allow the annual picnics to take place on thab date.

Chimney Cleaning.—Two . communications, were received, with reference to the contract; of cleaning the school chimneys during the forthcoming holidays. On the motion of Mr Farroll seconded by Mr Julian it was decided to give the work to -.6. ..VJ?,. Wilcox, who tendered ab the fate of le per chimney.
