A SPLIT IN THE CABINET. \; ,! : Melbourne, this day. There is a split in the Cabineb over the taxation proposals, as the result of which Sir F. T. Sarjjood, Minister of Defence, hw^ resigned from the Ministry. He opposed the proposed increase in exemption, and also disagreed with the methods adopted by the Governmanb in presenting the taxa- . tion in Bill. Theae methods, ho considered, were an infringement of the rights of tho ' Legislative Council. ~/. The Premier in accepting Mr Swgood'e ■ resignation, wrote co him stating he was • surprised that so old a parliamentarian as Mr .Sargood should have sent a copy of tho letter containing his resignation bo press for publication. Knowing the- taxation intentions of the Ministry, he shoud have J declined to join the Government in the, '' first instance. \
