THE ROADLESS NORTH.

This afternoon an important deputation re; presentative of the city and ot the districts North of Auckland, waited on Mr Seddon with reference to the question of constructing and maintaining a good system of roads throughout the Northern districts. Those comprising the deputabi(fn were: Meesra A. H. Nabhan (Chairman Chamber of Commerce), E. Mitchelson, M.H.R., Massey, M.H.R., J. M. Dargaville, Graves Aickin, Brown, R. A. Carr, Kent, Mays, W. Crowbher, M.H.R., Isbister (Chairman of the Otamatea Uounty Council), and Gubb (Chairman pf the Rodney County Council); Mr Nathan spoke in support of tlie; Chamber ot Commerce's resolution, urging.the Government to spend the money allocated for the Northern roads a3 soon as passible in-order to take advantage,of the summer weather. The money should be forthcoming as soon as possible, -bo. that the', road,-work : could be well advanced before -the .-winter set: in. He-thought thab some systematic manner of dealing wibh these Northern roads should be adopted. He instanced the Greab South Road, leading, from Auckland into the Wai*kato, which was constructed by the military thirty years ago, and which had been a most valuable road.in developing the resources of the districts - South ot Auckland. The settlement of. the northern district* depended .very largely on the proper roading of the.icountry,.. and ib , was absolutely necessary that good and permanent roads' Bhould be constructed. The Chamber of Commerce looked ab the -matter in the lighb of a colonial undertaking.

Mr labiater considered 'that each county should be granted a portion of the grant for roads in its district. Mr Dargaville alep spoke strongly in support of the request thab the fine weather should be taken advantage of for proceeding with the road work. ....
