THE CAULFIELD MEETING.
Those who studied the lorm 01 sno Australian horaeß during the winter months, and took a line from the running at the recent A.J.C. Meeting, had their calculations rudely shattered ab the first day's racing of the V.A.T.C. Meeting ab Caulh'eld last Saturday. In the Caulneld Stakes, run under weight for- age conditions, a number of " big guns "— including Carnage, Tarcoola, Fortunatus, Lady Trenton and Paris—meb with defeat, while the three-year-old heroes, of the A.J.C. Meeting were badly beaten in the Caulfield Guineas, the winner turning up in Cobbibty. "Tho much-talked-of V.R.C. Derby colt Dreamland started favourite, but couia only geb third. No doubt, the son of Trenton is backward, and he will be all the better for his gallop. In the Toorak Handicap a hob favourite went down in Bruin. He certainly carried Sab 101b, but his performance does nob by any means brighten his Caulfield Cup prospects, despite thab he has 121b leaa to carry in the milo and a-half race on Saturdaynext. However, Bruin ia said to have beaten Loyalty badly in a mile and a-half gallop yesterday. Devon, the winner of the Toorak Handicap, started ab 12 to 1. He ia a South Australian - bred horso, being got by Musket's son Musk Rose. Ho won three small races last season.
The"Caulfield Cup is run next Saturday. Thirty - one horses made the final payment lasb night, and the race appears &9 open aa ever. Havoc is among tho3e iefb in, and the horse has been so persistently supported for some days past thab it appears to me he will require to be reckoned with. Miraculeux and Brilliant showed good form ab the Melbourne Hun!) Club Meeting the other week when they respectively ran firsb and second for the Handicap Flab Race, 1£ miles. Theodore must have a chance. He won th&laabV.R.C. July Handicap, 1 mile, carrying 79t 41b, and he also won the Victorian Club Handicap, 1 mile 1 furlong, carrying Bat 21b. Paris reads dangerous. He won tho event under Bsb 8111" a' couple of years ago, and now with only 101 b more on his back he should nearly win again. It is reckoned by a Sydney writer that on Saturday nexb Paris will be from 71b to 101b a better horse than when he ran third to Projectile and Lady Trenton in the Metropolitan Stakes. Capstan and Ruenalf should bosh run well, and both Devon and Solanum read a dangerous pair on their Toorak Handicap form. The winner of the race is so well concealed that to attempt to pick ib is a very hard task. However, to make a selection, my straighb out fancy is Devon. The following horses made the final payment yesterday :— Caulfield Cup, 14 milo. A handicap of 2.0D080V3; l,soosovs of tho said sum to goto the first horse, MOsovs to the second, and 15050v3 to tho third. Penalties not cumulative. (160 SUD3.) stlb Mrs H. C.
