PERSONAL.
A movement is on foot amongst a section of the citizens of Auckland to present Mr P. A. Philips, Town Clerk, with a fitting testimonial of some sorb in November next in recognition of his past services to the city. In November next Mr Philips will have completed 25 years of public service in Auckland.
Sir Walter Buller has received from bhe King of Italy the insignia of Knigbb Commander of tho Crown of Ibaly, and & covering letter from the Secretary of State saying this high distinction, hitherto bestowed by His Majesty on few Englishmen, is conferred "iti token of his royal consideration towards the illustrious scientist, and of his royal appreciation of hia learned work on the birds of New Zealand."
Shortly after the steamer lonic passed Farewell Spit on Soptember 23rd,' Mr Fletcher, a saloon passenger, died from aooploxy. He was attacked on sth Soptember, and never rallied. Deceased was London manager of Chambers' Publishing Company, and booked bis passage to New Zealand for the sake of his health, and also to see a brother and dieter who reside in i>tin6din. •
