Richard Duffy, for attempted suicide while suffering from delirium tremens, pleaded guilty, and was allowed twelve months' probation. Annie Grier, sixteen years of age, for forgery, got twelve months on probation. Bridget Cody, seventy years old, for attempted suicide, was ordered to be kept in the Old Men's Home in Invercargill during the Colonial Secretary's pleasure. Wanganui, Tuesday. The Supreme Courb sittings were opened by Chief Justice PrencEergasb to-day. There were 19 cases on the criminal calendar, and nine on the civil, a divorce suit, a wife's petition for a judicial separation, and twoappeals from justices' decisions. Joshua Bason, for the alleged theft of a watch, was found nob guilty. R. W. Pooles, for larceny, was convicted, and sentenced to six mouths' imprisonment with hard labour. "No bills" were found s against C.. H. Beattie tor alleged forgery, Coleman for attempting to shoot, Soturley for theft from a dwelling, Finlayson for theft from the person. Wilson, for forgery of an endorsement, was sentenced to 9 months' imprisonment ; McKenna for forgery of a cheque, two years; Bestford, charged with theft of money, pleaded guilty and applied for probation. Remanded for a week. The Grand Jury made a presentment to the Chief Justice that in their opinion it would give the public greater confidence in the proper administration of justice if the tenure of office of judges and magistrates of inferior courts wore made more secure than ab present. A further presentment was made as to the inadequate and unhealthy state of the prison ceils in the Court building. , Timaru, Tuesday. At the Supreme Court to-day there was only one prisoner for trial, J. Coatigan, for two misdemeanours under the Bankruptcy Act. He was acquitted on the charge of incurring debts without a prospect of paying, bub found guilty for failing to keep proper books, and was sentenced to one months' imprisonment. Judge Denniston also heard argument on an appeal from the S.M. Court, and reserved bis decision. The business of the session is completed.
