Melbourne, September 20.

The elections, so far as can bo gathered to-day, will result in the defeat of the Oarer nraenb nod a Victory for the Liberal party. All the Labour members were returned. Three Ministers will loss their soats, And possibly four. The returns are incomplete ac yefc, but Mr Bent (the Speaker) and Sir 6. O'Loughlin bare been defeated, while Messrs Turner (leader of the Opposition), Smith, Murray, the Hon. Outran, Reid, Carter, and Daakin have been elected. Sir J. Patterson, the Premier, secured his election ab Castlemaine, but na junior member. Mr Fink defeated Mr Bosisto. Melbourne, this day. The Hod. R. Richardson, Minister of Railways, the Hon. R. Baker, Minister of Customs, and Hon. L. L. Smith, were defeated. Sir Graham Berry and the Hon. Wm. Shields were retnrned. Sir J. B. Pattoraon is junior to a Labour member.! Twenty-nine old members have been reelected. The Opposition labour members met with great success, and their victories wore marked by large majorities. Labour representatives 6ecured 18 seats. Mr Trenwith was re-elected. The following indicates the state of parties : Oppositionists, 65 ; Ministerialists, 30. Those iv favour of a high tariff number 30.
