DATES OF COMING EVENTS.

AUSTRALIA. October 13-Caulfield Guineas October 20—Caulfield Cup November 3-V.R.C. Derby Novembers-Melbourne Cup

Horse owners and those interested should bear in mind that entries for the Auckland Cap, A.R.C Handicap and Steeplechase, to be run at the A.R.C. Summer Meeting, and for the Prince of Wales Handicap, City Handicap aud Hurdle Race, run at the Second Spring Meeting close on Friday, night nexb. Auckland horses promise bo be well represented ab bhe Hawke's Bay Jockey Club Spring Meeting. I hear thab Doris, Sb. Clements, Forme and the two-year-old filly Forma are to be sent to Napier to take parb in bhe meebing. Sir Robert Stout's Gaming Bill has been signed by the Governor, and as it comes into operation immediately, all "tote" Bhopsand walking " totalisators " are now liable to prosecution. George Wrighb is expecbed bo reburn bo Auckland wibh Three Sbar and Co. in bhe B.s. Elingamite, due to arrive about bhe Isb of Ocbober. Ib i 3 more than likely that Three Star will complete his Now Zealand Cup preparation ab Ellerslie. Acceptances for bhe Auckland Trotting Club Meeting are due on Friday night next. It is expected tbe Auckland Racing Club will suffer a loss over tbe Firsb Spring Meebing. Word comes from Melbourne thab Aquarius has broken down in braining, has been fired, and turned out. He is engaged in both Cups, but is an unlikely starter. Mr S. H. Gollan became a happy father on September 5. It is stated the connections of Grenadier have abandoned tbe proposed trip to Napier. " The following foalings are announced from Wellington Park :—Hazel (by Nordenfeldb—Ouida), colb bo St. Leger ; Sapphire (by The Drummer—Amebhysb), dam of bhe flying Blue Fire, colb to St. Leger. Up to date, Mr Morrin bas 13 foals, seven of which are colts and six fillies. The raco horses Ben Godfrey and Ingorina now occupy boxes ab Williamson's stable. Messrs Nathan's mare Miss Lebby (by St. Leger—Necklace), bas produced a filly bo Dreadnought. Operatic slipped her foal to St. Leger. The Ashburton Cup, 1_ ipile; is run tomorrow 7 The acceptors are: Prime Warden,; 9sb 51b; Saracen, 9sb ,* Liberator, Bst 131b; Aqualato,' 7flb 21b ; Goodtvpod, 6sb lllb. Liberator ahould prove bardesb to beat. The Queensland Governmenb intends to pot down sweeps ab the end of tbe year. From January Isb, 1895, no lebbers will be delivered to persona who are known to be sweep promoters. The win of Emm Fasba in the Hawkeabury Handicap makes bhe fourth time since 1877 that Mr John Mayo annexed tbe event. The V.R.C. Derby candidate Moorite started favourite for tbe Rosstown Handicap ab Caulfield on September Bth, but failed bo gain a place. The Thunderbolb colt Thunderer appears to be the best two-year-old in South Australia this season. He has won his second race, carrying off the Nursery Handicap ab the S.A.J. 0. meeting with 9at 31b up. •He was a cheap yearling, being Bold for 65ge. When bbc lasb mail lefb England, T. Loates headed the winning jockeys' list with 94 wins in 434 races, between March 26th and Augusb 3rd inclusive. M. Cannon had 364 rides during tbab time, and won 84 races, and of 343 races he rode in F, Finlay won 56. Ib transpires that laaac, winner of the Trial Sbakes at Randwick on Saturday last, was heavily backed for the Caulfield Cup some days before the A.J.C, Meeting. All the money in the Melbourne market that could be obtained was secured at 20 to 1. The horse was backed to win several thousands, and probably carries more money than any other animal up to the present. Isaac is trained by J. Monaghan ab Randwick, and is said to be a second edition of Jeweller. They are bobh by the same Bire, Splendor. Isaac's dam, Old Wife, was sired by Piscator from Ragpicker, by Fisherman from thab celebrabed stud matron, Julieb (imporbed), by Touchsbone. It ia highly probable thab sbarbing by machinery will be in force ab the next Melbourne Cup meeting. The V.R.C. committee have invited patentees of any inventions bhey have not already seen to bring their starting gates oub for inspection. I nobice bhab no fewer bhan 14 jockeys were fined by bhe starter for disobedience ab bhe recenb Adelaide races. If the Btarting machine does nothing else, ib will ab leasb prevent jockeys from thus ruthlessly being deprived of a big percenbage of bheir income, and they, at any rate, should hopo for its early inbroducbion. Ib will be noticed tbab bhe Metropolitan Sbakes was started with the machine yesterday. Whab a grand line Alec Taylor will be able to geb bhrough Capstan as to bis chance of annexing the Caulfield and Melbourne Cupa (says a Melbourne writer). This stable promises to be unusually dangerous this season. Elswick, Idolator, Lord Randolph, and Brobherbon are all talked of for the Caulfield Cup, as well as Capstan. If a genuine move was made in favour of one of these in preference to Capstan the latter would soon be senb bo the right-about in the betting. I don't think bhe stable is, however, likely to have anything better for the Caulfield Cup than Capstan. * The salary of bhe secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club has been increased by £75 per annum. There are about thirty horses now in training on tbe New Plymouth course, including Lebel and Sylvia Park. Marahal Ney and Three Sbar have been withdrawn from bhe Caulfield Guineas. The wagers baken in Melbourne recenbly about the Caulfield Cup included 500 to 15 Warpaint, 500 to 20 Bruin, 500 to 20 Straightfire, 1,000 to 20 Leyland. Capstan remains the favourite ab 100 to 7. Aboub Carnage for bhe Melbourne Cup 100 bo 6 iB wanted, bub 100 bo 7 ia bhe besb price on offer. Napier advices sbabe that Brigand is going along nicely in his work. Loch Ness is looking fresh and well, and he appears to have got over his trouble of last year which knocked him out. The death is reported, from Melbourne, of Mr. Morris Jacob's bhreeyear-old filly, Lady's Maid, by Newminsterfrom Waiting Mai**

The Pioneer, who ran second to Tim Swiveller in the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdle Race in 1893, was injured recently in the Epsom (Vie.) Steeplechase and died.

Glancuß (by Somnns—Fishwoman) has found a new home, having been purchased by Mr T. Brown, of New Plymouth. He was shipped in the s.s. Gairloch on Monday.

Au Revoir has been backed for more money than any other horse in the New Zealand Cup (writes ** Spectator "), and he is really the public favourite. He iB going along very well jusb now, bub ib would nob surprise me if Liberator were bo prove bhe bebber horse to follow. He is going in good style, and appears very sound. Derrebb was riding Blue Fire in easy pace work ab Riccarbon on Wednesday morning, when a number of bhe Yaldhursb horses were down, including Magazine, who now looks bigger than he was before bhe Grand National Meebing. It will take Mason all this time to have him well by New Zealand Cup time. Mr Gollan was within an ace of purchasing Liberator before he won the Grand National Hurdle-Race (writes "Rata"). Butler remarked to him on the course one morning: "I hear you gave £500 for Norton; you can have Liberator for the same, and then you have a chance of winning bhe double." Mr Gollan refused to purchase, bub he*said bo a friend ab bhe bime: "Were my leg all righb I should have, him." Had Mr Gollan's leg been all righb there is no doubb he would have ridden Norbon in the National.

Although tbe names of Pilgrim's Progress, Carbine, Malua and Lechiel are not amongsb bhe 19 eballions nominated for bhe V.R.C: Sires' Produce Stakes of 1898, bhe entries oubnumber by one those of lasb year, and musb, therefore, be considered satisfactory. The imported contingent show a bold front in Eiridapord, Bill of Portland, Gang Forward, Nautilus and Gossoon. Pilgrim's Progress was left oub of the list through inadvertence, and it is thought Carbine's absence is attributable to the same cause.

The Bill to restrict the use of the totalisator has passed both Houses in Tasmania. Under its provisions the machine can be used ab regattas, at bhe Axemen's Association Sports, as well as on racecourses which are registered by the T.R.C. or T.T.C. There are to be no shop totalisators, the Act providing a fine of £50 or six months' imprisonment as the reward of any one caugbb running a private totalisator. The racing clubs cannot complain of tbe way the Legislature has treated them. They can use the machine as often as they like, and charge ten per cenb.

T. Hickson, who was once a well-known jockey in New South Wales, is credited with having pub up something of a record recently at Noumea. He trained horses which ran in 17 races. Of bhab number 13 were won, and Hickson was in the saddle on each occasion.

Tho two races won by Isinglass this year amounb to £20,196. As a 3-year-old Mr H. McCalmotib's champion won £18,860, and as a 2-year-old £4,577, making a total during tbe three seasons of £43,633. Large ab this sum appears, ib may be mentioned bhat Donovan in two seasons won £55,154 10a. It is hardly possible for Isinglass to reach bhis total before the close of tbo presenb season.

Mr W. T. Jones, who recenbly purchased Capstan, goes in a lot for the English style in racing. His horse-clothing is imporbed, and is very elaborate.-. Charlie Ivimy, who recently joined Alec Taylor's stable, and who will do all Mr Jones' riding, was asked to shave off bis moustache (0 la English jockeys) before taking tip his abode at Burrumbeeb.

Mr W. R. 'Wilson's Trentina won the :V. A.T.'C. Two-year-old Handicap ab-Caul-field races on September: 7bh. She waß bred by her owner ab St. Albans,.and cosb 120 guineas as a yearling. She" is a halfsister to Foxtail and Merrywing, and is engaged in the Maribyrnong Plate. Trentina and Challenger are in mosb requesb for bbc Maribyrnong. Plate.

The Special Commissioner in tbe " London Sportsman," wfyo is an authority on breeding, discourses thus: —" We are mosb of us in this country far too little given to consider the value of the descent of blood stock in the female line from the original mares, though, as I have more than once writben, the preponderance of quite a small number of those mares has proved quite as striking as has the persistency in tail male of the Darley Arabian, the Godelphin Arabian, and the Byerly Turk ; and when we see tbab descent from one ot a chosen few of .these mares may be claimed by an overwhelming majority of our classic winners, ib is of no little interest, not to say importance, to gauge our two-year-olds by this test. Which of them can trace in the female lines to the most famous matron? Among our three-year-olds, Ladas traces to the most successful mare of all, the Natural Barb mare ; bub I do nob find thab any of the leading two-year-olds can claim similar distinction. Nottingham (England) racing authorities are out with something new. They have advertised a steeplechase, with an allowance of 7ib for horses which, on the day of tbe race, have sired ten living foals. The death of Bullingdon, which was announced some time back by cable, was duo to an accidenb the colb met wibh while journeying by train. He hurt ono of his legs, which swelled tp a bremendous size, and refußed to yield to veterinary treatment .

In conversation wibh Mr R. J. Mason the othor day, thab trainer told me (•' Spectator ") thab he could call to memory over £20,000 worth of racing stock being sold from Yaldhurst since his term as trainer to Mr G. G. Stead. Since bhe C. J.C. meeting fourteen borses have been sold from the Yaldhurat's string, and still all the boxes are full, chiefly with sonß and daughters of Maxim. .

One of the biggest winners on Ladas' Derby was Lord Roßebery's youthful daughter. Fry (the , leviathan British bookmaker) was her victim. When he paid over the £9,000 to Miss Primrose's commissioner, he remarked, " I must have been a mug to lay a big bet like tbat to a bloomin' infant, even, who's a cross between a Scotchman and a Jew.''

Ab Sbawell, on bhe evening of the 6th mot., Charlie Memmott, champion billiardisb of Australia, played Harry Gray, exchampion, a game of 1,000 up, spot barred, the champion conceding Gray 200 points. When bhe labter was 600 Memmott's score sbood 305, and after another half an hour's play Gray ran oub the winner by 101.
