MAORT LAND CASE.
Kamira te Mahara and Others v. George HARNETT.—This was an action to seb aside as invalid a deed of loase made bebween the plainbiffs and defendant, with respecb to Patau Island, Whangarei.—Kamira te Mahara, in is evidence, stated he did nob undersband thab tho agreement gave defendanb the right to buy the land. He understood he was only signing ' the agreement for the lease.— Mr Cooper opened the case for the defence, and submitted thab the whole case turned on the question of explanabion of the deed. —The defendant, who resides ab Parua Bay. deposed that the deed was prepared by Mr Carrubb, of Whangarei. A Maori branslation was abbached bo bhe lease. Mr Ross and Mr Keyes were presenb when the deed was signed by the bhree natives. Witness could talk Maori. The deed waa read in English and'Maon to bhe natives, and explained in Maori. _ Witness had paid a year's rent, but he did nob get possession until this time of any parb of bhe place.—Obher evidence was given, and the case waa proceeding late this afternoon.
