SUNDAY SERVICES.
In several of the Auckland churches yeaterday reference was made to the proposal to commence a Sunday tramway service in the city, the speakers treating the subject.in a condemnatory manner. A special discourse to .members of tne Society of Christian Endeavour was preached last evening in the Baptist Tabernacle by the Rer. Jas. Blaikie. In the course of his address he deprecated attempts which he asserted were being made in the direction of secularising Sunday, and referred to the fact that a protest against the proposal- to run tramcars on Sunday would be placed before the Christian Endeavour Convention for adoption, prior to being presented to the City Council. . The anniversary services of the Mount Eden Congregational Church were held yesterday and were well attended. Mr George Aldridee preached in the morning, the Rev. F.Warner in the .afternoon, and the Rev. \V. J. Williams in the.evening. Special hymns were sung by the children. At all the services there were large congregations', and the singing of * the young children was much .appreciated. The col-, lections towards the school funds amounted to over £20, a substantial increase upon previous years. On Wednesday evening the scholars' tea and entertainment will take place. ' •■ • ~ Si). Luke's Presbyterian Church Sunday school celebrated their anniversary yesterday with special services. In the morning the Rev. T. F. Robortson, of St. Stephen's, Ponsonby, preached an impressive . discourse, tho matter of which was principally directed to parents. Tho Row Mr Headrick, lately from Scotland, preached in the afternoon. He based bis discourse on the words "God is love," hie Remarks being addressed to the children. A strong choir and orchestra were. present under Mr Perkins. In the evening the Rev. Mr Headrick again preached. An after.meeting was aUo held. Collections in aid of Sunday-school funds were taken up at each service. • .
Ab St. Benedict's yesterday the choi gave an excellent rendering of Gounod's "Mease Solennelle" under the baton ot the Rev. Dr. Egan. At the offertory an "Aye Maria," composed, by Sydnpy Hoben, the young New Zealand pianist, was sung by Mr John Fuller, with violin obligato by Herr Zimmermann. The Very Rev. Father Downey celebrated the mass, and the. liev Gregory preached.
