NEW SOUTH WALES ELECTIONS.
SUCCESS OF THE FREE TPvADE PARTY. THE PREMIER'S ELECTION UNCERTAIN. Sydney, July 17.
There is tremendous excitement in the city to-night over the elections. The Freetraders have carried the day in Sydney and suburbs. Of 45 returns already completed, the Freetrade candidates have secured 34 seats, Protectionists 6, aud Labour 5. Sir Henry Parkes has been returned for St. Leonards, Mr B. R. Wise (or the Flinders Division of Sydney, Mr G. if. Reid for the King Division of Sydney, and Mr VV. McMillan for Burwood. Mr Edmund Barton, formerly in the Dibbs Ministry as Attorney-General, has been rejected for Randvvick, also the Hon. F. B. Suttor, Minister of Public Instruction, for Bathurst, Mr Daniel O'Connor for the Gipps Division of Sydney, and Sir VVm. P. Manning for the Phillip Division of Sydney. Mr Sydney Smith, who was formerly a member in the Parkes Administration, replaces Mr F. B. Suttor, who ia at prcstnl absent in Canada. The Labour party only obtained five seats in the city and suburbs, although it was .generally regarded as their stronghold. The returns, however, from the country districts are increasing the strength of those who have signed the pledge of the Labour Electoral League ; and up to the present the League has obtained twelve seats, which with tbe Independent Labour candidates gives them approximately twenty-two members. The Free Trade candidates have secured 51 scats, and the Protectionists 28. The Rev. G. W. Smaile?, one of the Labour Electoral League candidates, was defeated by Mr G. McCredie, the sitting member for Granville. The Hon. John See, Colonial Treasurer (Grafion), Mr J. H. Carruthers (St. George), Mr J. N. Brunker (East Maitland), and the Hon. T. M. Slattery, Secretary for Mines (Booroowa), Mr A. J. Gould (Singleton), and Mr W. P. Crick (West Macquarrie) have been leturned. Messrs Cotton (a prominent supporter of the single tax), Neild, and Burdekin have been rejected. Sir G. R. Dibbs is leading for Tamworth, but not sufficiently to place the i result beyond doubr. The Hon. J. Kidd (PostmasterGeneral) has been defeated for Camden, and Mr Ninian Melville (Chairman of Committees) for Waratah.
