Mr T. Bassefefc, Aratapu ; R. McKay an& \V. H. Shakespeare, Takupuna, havo been) appointed J.P's. Mr Johu Horrax, of Wellington, ban been elected to tho vacancy on the NetV Zealand Pharmacy Board. Dr. Thomas Burns has been appointed medical superintendent at the Auckland! Asylum, Dr. Fookes to Seacliffe Asylum, Lit. King to Wellington and Porirua Asy* 1 lutns, and Dr. Hassell to Sunnyside ABylunii Mr A. S. Russell, the local manager of the Soubh British Insurance Company, was a passenger for tho South on July sth by the u.s. Rotoinahana. Mr Russell is on a trip home to Scotland and took pasea^e by the N.Z. Shipping Co.'a fino Btoamer l^uahine which loft Lybtelton for London via Rio on the 10th inst. The visit is to be but of short duration, the gentleman* expecting to be back in Auckland about tho New Year. On July 6th a large number of Parneli residents and parents of school children assembled in tho Parnell Public School, tbo occasion being a farewell presentation tff> I Mr P. Leonard, tho retiring hoadmaster, and ! a welcome to Mr J. L. Scott, his successor. Mr Leonard, who had charge of tho school for 21 years, is succeeded by Mr J. L. Scott. The large room in the schoolhouss was crowded fcoexcess, and Mr N. W. Pollard, Chairman of the School Committee, presided. The Chairman, after some felicitous remarks, presented Mr Leonard with a handsome <ro!d Waltham watch, which had the following inscription engraved on thfl inner case :—" Presented to P. Leonard, Esq., by the resident?, teachers and 6cho)ara of tho Parnell School district, after 21 years' service as head-teacher. July t 1894." Mr Pollard, in making the presentation, spoke in warm terms of Mr Leonard's ability and fidelity wben in charges of tho Parnell School, ?.nd of the esteem nnd deep respect entertained for him by scholars and parent?.
