BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The osual weekly meeting of the Board of Education was held to-day. Pretont :Mr R. Ud'y (Chairman) and Messrs Luko, Mair, Lambe, Wilding, Woodward and the Rev. J. Babes.

Financial.—The bank balances to.date were read as follows :—Education f«nd, credit, £455 15s lOd : building fund, credit, £191 2s 5d ; total, £646 18s 3d ; (Jirlo 1 High School, credit, 19s Bd.

Chairman's Report.—This report stated among other things : — Auckland City: Committee have been informed thai Mini Bottrill is not available for appointment to Beresford-sbreet School. Driving Creek:

Mr J. McCartin has been informed that the Act contains no provision to exclude a member of Committee from contracting to gravel school ground. Waibi: Messrs Mann and Co., of Tauranga, -have been informed that old school building is not for sale.— Warkworth : Explanation has been sent to Committee regarding staff of school.—The report was adopted. • .

Resignation.—The resignation was received of Miss A. M. Mulvaney, awiatano, Waiotahi Creek School. ■

Perm, Tbachbrs' Examination.—lt 'was stated in the Chairman's report that arrangements had been made for Mr Roach to supervise the examination at Hamilton, owing to the illness of Inspector Crowe. —: Eleanor M. Kensella had been refused admission to this year's examination being under age.—Geo. Miller had been admitted to examination upon certificate of Auckland medical examiner.

Corporal Punishment.— The report drawn up by the Chairman and the Rev. J. Bates relative to corporal punishment in schools and published in last Tuesday'! Star, was discussed and adopted. Clause 3 was amended , by the addition of the word " deliberate," and reads: "That ife should be limited to deliberate breaches of discipline and to wilful faults other than grave moral offences."

■ School Fund Accocnts.—Mr Jan. Gy Carr, auditor, submitted the summary o* the school fund accounts for the year end" liig 31sb March, 1894. He stated that he had examined the whole of the accounts except those of the Mount Albert School Committee, which though repeatedly applied for, had not yeb been sent in.'uhd were not included in the summary. On the whole the accounts are satisfactory. Several of the Committee accounts be had not been able to certify to, owing to the fact that the bank pass books had nob been sent in. With regard to the Waihoka Island Committee accounts, the Chairman holds the balance, the reason given being that as there is no bank on the island, the Chairman pays the accounts as they bocomo due,' ■ ' '

Working Men's Collkge!—The Rer. J. Bates was appointed to represent the Board at the meeting of the Working Men's CoUe?o Association.

Establishment op Schools.—ln reference to applications for establishment of schools and" enlargement of Mount Eden School, Mr Muir moved. "Thus in view of the season of tho year and rearrangement of architect's department, the consideration of the building ot naw schools and teachers' houses be postponed till the last meeting of the Board, September." Mr Muir explained that the motion would not in any way atfecb buildings already authorised. — The motion wat carried.

Swimming in Schools.—The Chairman of the City Schools Committee wrote that th« Committee are of opinion that it would be a step in the right direction to ask the Minister of Education to place on 'the Estimates a sura for the instruction of the pupils attending the State schools, and approves of the appointment-of. an instfttCtflw-»• mgSeated fey tfre TOW1 Zeaiaifti^SWimmin? .Association.—The Board passed a resolution expressing approval. -.Messrs Muir and Lnmbe dissented. =IJ> »> ~

Tenders,—Mr William Stoupe's tender was accepted for erection of a second school building at Wslroa South. The amount'of the tender was £159. The next tender wai £159 15s (Mr J. Rbwe). Nine tenders wer« received.

Henderson's Mill. — The Committee agreed that there wae nob sufficient reason to invalidate the second School Committea election at Henderson's Mill. . ' Newmarket.—The Newmarket Committee drew the Boaid's attention to the inadequate scale for school stationery!—l» was agreed to reply that the grant to Newmarket is the same as given to schools, of similar size.

Newton. —The Newton Schools Committee forwarded a resolution chat wuilo endorsing the action of the Board in reducing the salaries of head teachers receiving over £200, they regretted the Board had increased its expenditure £600 by tna ap-% pointment of a Chief Inspector.—The Chairman said the expenditure would not be increased £600, The Chief Inspector would take the position ot another inspector.' Ha moved, "The Newton Committee be informed the expense would only be £350."-— Some of the members thought no notice should bo taken of the communication,'and it was received.

Grants for Repairs.—The 'following grants were made :—Russell: £6, for fencing. Hunua : £8 I' 2« for fencing. Bombay : £2 15b, repairs to school fence and two-third coet of shelter shed. Kibi Kihi: Grates granted. Newton East; Application for gravel for West rchool referred to Mr Muir. Te Aroha : £12 for wash-house. Warkworth :£2 I£<3 4d for fencing. :. ,

Dacre's Claim.—Tha Committee wrote

that they intended removing tho' Big Omaha School to Pakiri road at their own COBt.
