The Auckland Trades and Labour Council ab its meeting on Saturday evening appointed a deputation to wait on the Devonport Borough Council with reference to conditions attached to the position of engineer to theDovonport borough waterworks. The Council decided to defer consideration of the Contractors' and Workmen's Lieu Bill, and also to write to the Auckland Harbour Board in support of the appeal made to the Board by the Typographical Association in the matter of future tendering for printing. A letter from the Hon. R. J. Seddon, Premier, waa read, regarding the Gumdiggers' Union and tho appeal for Government works in the North, in the course of which the Premier stated that the Governmenr is doing its best with the means at command to find employment on reproductive works for the most needy cases," in consequence of the languishing of the kauri gum industry. Tho Premier further said: "Payment for works can only be made as tbe revenue accrues from time to /time, and it would bo impossible to suddenly increase the public works expenditure unless there was a corresponding expansion in the revenue." The Columbia Skating Rink i 8 to bo opened on Thursday evening next under the directorship of Mr H. Vincent, who has had experience in the management of large rinks in the Australian colonies. Creat attractions aro to be offered to tho rinking public this soason, and on the opening night beautiful limelight effects will be produced, and skating by moonlight will be one oT the faaturea.
Miss Freda Marsden, the talented violinist, who haa become deservedly popular during liar three years' residence here, gives a musical entertainment tonight at St. Sepulchre's School. A largo audience ia expected.
