THE DEATH DUTIES.
ATTITUDE OF THE AGENTS GENERAL.
London, June 23. The "St. James' Gazette" coneidera that the Chancellor haß climbed down with regard to the death dutiea.
The Agents-General of the colonies reserve their assent bo the Chancellor's compromise reapecting bhe death duties, pending their hearing the exact terms of the amendment, and they have plainly asaured Sir Wm. Harcourt that he haa no right to tax property situated in the colonies. The Agents fear that the acceptance of a compromise will admit the principle of the scheme.
The " Daily Chronicle " regrets that the colonies do noc propose the imposition of a heavy tax on u.bsenteos, and states that the Chancellor's oonceasion regarding the death dues closes a promiaing avenue of British revenue.
