"COSTLEY" IN THE MUSEUM.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —A few days ago I met an Ancklander in the Museum, and asked him whab was the objecb of having bhe word " Costley " on a board ab tbe end of the building. He told me thab thab was the collective wisdom of that learned body, the "Auckland institute," for in solemn conclave assembled, they had taeb night after oighb in order to discuss the problem—" Whab shall be done unto the man whom the Institute delighteth to honour ?" ' As the result of their deliberations, it was unanimously resolved thab the name " Cosbley" be painted on a bib of board, tbua showing their deep gratitude for a bequest ot over twelve thousand pounds. Now, instead of such a meaningless arrangement, any less learned body would have pub.up a chaste marble tablet, with something like tbe following inscription thereon :—" In grateful remembrance of ; Mr Edward Costley, who died ab Auckland in tbe.year 1883, and left about a hundred thousand pounds to the public institutions of this city, of which the Museum gob over twelve thousand pounds." I A simple memorial like thab might impart the following lesson toother thousandariori, "Gothou and do likewise."—l am, etc., W. Grekxshiblds.
