BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETINGS.

DEVONPORT.

The ordibary meeting of the Devonporb Borough Council was held last evening in the Council Chambers at tho North Shore. There were present: Messrs E. W. Alißon (Mayor), M. Niccol.O. Mays, R. Wynyard, and'W. .Avenel. .. ' Cattle Grazing.—Mr E. W. Payton wrote again complaining of cattle being allowed to graze on the public streets. —The letter was referred to the police, with a request to report upon the matter. Light Wanted.—A number of ratepayers and residents df the borough wrote requesting the Council to erecb a gas lamp on bhe northern corner of Cheltenham Beach Road and Lake Road, where a light was greatly needed.—Referred to Legal and Finance Committee.

Dedication oe New Road.—The seal of the Council was affixed bo a deed of dedication of parb of Mr F. Duder's property which was given bo the Council for the purpose of a new road, tho portion of land in question being between Lota 15 and 15a, Borough of Devonporb. . J.. J' Dangerous Roads.— A' councillor drew attention to the bad state off tho roads in certain places where the waterworks contractors bad left the pipe track in bad repair, and instanced an accident through the pipe track nob being sufficiently attended to, on the Lake Road, a brake having broken' its sbafb between Lake Takapuna and Devonporb.—lb was stated thab the contractors were taking steps to put the roads in proper repair. * i Waterworks.—Mr H. .'W.,..„J^ejtcalf, water works Tmgfneet. reported' oh various matters connected with the water supply, with reference to services, etc. He pointed hub "tfiftb 7 an" attebdant Mfot: the v pumping' 1 .station would be needed, who, in addition to being a competent engineer and fitter should be able to repair a burst, and do such lead jointing as might be required. He stated that the coat of a telephone wire to the pumping station at the Lake from Devonport • was estimated by the Telegraph Department ab £45. An electrical recorder showing at the pumping station the depth of wator in the reservoir would cost £90. To make use of tho water in case of fire, a hosereol and ab least 1,000 feet of hose were needed. Other appliances, tools, etc., were needed ab the pumping station, and he estimated the coßt of appliances, shed, etc., at, roughly, £250.—1t was decided to hold a Bpecial meeting of the Council on Monday evening next to deal with the above matters, and also to consider waterworks by-laws. _■'.'• NEWTON. The usual fortnightly meeting of the JNewtOn Borough Council was held last night. Relative to the approaches to Cox's Creek Bridge, the Town Clork of Auckland wrote that the matter bad been referred to the Streets Committee. Tho Mayor intimated that Mr Currie, the Town Clerk, had examined the place where fish refuse was deposited,-and found that it was outside the boundary ,of the district, being off Point Chevalier, and the Council had no authority in the matter. It was agreed thab the footpath be formed and scoria laid from the Chinaman's gate to the slaughterhouse in the borough. It was also resolved that a crossing bo laid down on the Great North Road from top of Kent-street, and also that the crossing in Crummer Road be put. in repair. The Council further agreed to put scoria down on the footpath in Rose Road from Pollen-street to Sussexstreet! PARNELL. The usual fortnightly meeting of tho Pornell Borough Council was hold last evening. Tho following members were present :—Mr .T. McCabe (Chairman), Messrs Walker, Thornes, Pollard, Page, Withy, Gilmore, Wright and Briggs. St. Georges Bay Road.—The Mayor read an endorsement to be made on the deed between the Harbour Board and property owners re the proposed road, binding the Board bo supply the Council with the necessary material for filling in the road.— The endorsement was agreed to.

Annual Balance-sheet.—The Council's balance-8-.eeb'for Slab March, 1893. .was reburned by the Auditor-General certified by him as correct.—Agreed to receive the letter and to send the Auditor-General a copy of the balance-Bhoeb when prinbed for record ab his office.

Contagious Diseases.—Dre. Wright and Haines each reported a case of dipbheria in Parnell,

Lamp Posts.—The Town Clerk of tho Auckland City Council wrote stating, that that body could supply the Parnell Council with two lamp posts and lanterns at £3 10s each, cash to be paid on delivery.—Agreed to purchase two lamps at tho . price named.

Licensing Elections.—A letter was received from tho Secretary of the Eden Terrace Road Board, with reference to bhe expenses of bhe recent licensing election. He had been requested to point out thab the Board considered the amount payable by each district should have been calculated according to the amount of each local body, and also that the clerk of the local body appointed to administer the Act should also perform the office of clerk to the Lies, rising Committee, both for the sake of convenience and economy.—The letter was received.

Dog Tax.—On the motion of Mr Pollard, it was agreed to Bupporb the dog tax collector in suing the owners of all unregistered dogs, and to defray whatever, expenses he incurs in the event of his failing to cqnvict.Z ... I*tsT Contract.—Mr H, A, Hodgson

wrote stating that he was prepared to take the contract for three years,,and enclosing a letter from Mr. Mason agreeing to receive, the.- refuse for the same period. —On Jlfoe. motion of Mr Thornes.it was resolved to allow the present contracb, which was for .12 months, to expire, wben fresh tenders would be called for,

Appointment of Valuer. —According to a resolution of the Council adopted at the previous meeting, applications for the position of valuer bad been called lor by advertisement, and replies were received from the following applicants:—R. Borough, T. Choeseman, G. M. Gelling, James Slater, George Fraser, J. G. Carr. H. Asht^n and Son, and J. S. Duke.—Cr. Thornes pointed out thab the advertisement had not beon worded in accordance with the Council's resolution, which intended that tenders only should be received for the position. As a consequence of the mistake the majority of tho applicants bad not mentioned the salary they were proposed to receive.—lt was resolved, therefore, on the motion of Cr. Page, to call for fresh tenders.

Tree Cutting.—Tenders for cutting pine trees in St. Stephen's Avenue were received as follows :—H. Carter, 7s 6d per tree; P. Green, 10s; Alderton and Kitchen, 12s; and A. Dare, 12a 6d.—The Council agreed to accept the tender of Mr Carter. Balances.—The following balances of the accounts of the Council Were read :—Water supply rates : Credit, £73 Os 3d. Waterworks loan : Credit, £20815s 2d, Drainage loan : Credit, £241 17s 3d. General rate: Debit, £70116s 9d. Be Water Supply.—The Towrt Clerk forwarded a copy of the Engineer's report on the late, fire ab Parnell, pointing oub the necessity for the Parnell authorities to ring up in order to have Kyber Pass turned off ab once whenever a fire bad been extinguished, otherwise the City Council would have to stop giving them Kyber Pass for fires. Through this neglect on Monday of last week, a* large quantity of water was üßed from Kyber Pass, which need not- have been used, and the extra cost came upon the city.—Letters were also read from Mr C. D. Cowan, Captain of the Parnell Fire Brigade, and from Mr B. J. Kemp, drawing attention to tho insufficiency of the water supply in the borough, and pointing out that the late fire at Mr Wood's store had destroyed the adjoining buildings in consequence of the pressure from the Kyber Pass Reservoir not being readily available. After considerable discussion upon the subject, it was finally moved by Cr. Pollard that ib would be advisable bo discontinue paying Mr Robinson for the use of his telephone for fire purposes and to apply for a telephone to be placed in the Fire Brigade Station for the use of firemen.
