SPORTS.. IN THE DOMAIN

In* spite of the unfavourable weather the Roman Catholio fete in the Domain on {Saturday, St. Patrick's Day, was very suecosaful. Several thousands of people were on the ground duiing the day, and the Bporte, etc., wonb off well. The three bands on. the ground—lmpey's, Hunter's, and West'?) Newton — provided excellent mime during the day. The children of St. Benedict's parish, which comprises the districts ct Avondale, Arch Hill and Jllount Rotkill, bordering upon the central distriob «f Newton, assembled at St. Benedict's Church on Saturday morning to the number of about 450. The pupils from the Convent schools at Surrey Hills, were marched to St. Benedict's in charge of the Rev. Father Gregory and members of St. Benedict's Christian Doctrine Society. The Newton Band, under Bandmaster West, headed the procession. After mass at St. Benedict's, celobratdd by Father Downey, during which the children's singing of special hymns to the patron saint of the day was a pr«xninonb feature, the badges were distributed and the procession formed. Starting from St. Benedict's, the procession marched down to Hobson-street, and joined the main body from St. Patrick's at the ]uncti»n o! Wellesley and Hobsoo-streets, whence they proceeded tc the Domain. The children were in charge of the members of St. Benedict's Christian Doctrine Society, under the superintendence of the Rev. Dr. Egan. The children were well mpplied with bannerettes of various colours. Refreshments, games, and sports were indulged in at the Domain notwithstanding the uncomfortable state of. the weather, and the children returned early in the evening. Yesterday afternoon the Rev. Dr. Egan distributed the prizes won st Saturday's sports by the scholars and teachers of St. Benedict's Sunday-school." Amongst those present on the ground were His Lordship Bishop Luck, His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. J. Holland), and Mr W. Crowther, M.H.R. The Bishop gave some acceptable prizes for the school children's sports. The silver medal given annually by Father Leniban was won by John O'Sullivan.

Theauiual sports in connection with the Auckland branch of the Hibernian Society were held in the Domain in the afternoon, Messrs P. Kearney and J. Coyle acting as |udges, and Mr S. 11. Fair weather as Jtatter.

Girls- under 16 years (BCyds).—Mary jj'ynn, 1 ; Eva Leydon, 2; Sarah Moore, £•■ For this race there were 15 competitors.
