Largest Diamond in the World.
The Excelsior, the largest diamond in the world, is now deposited in one of the safea of the Bank of England. It was found in Juno last in the mine of Jagersfoncein, Cape Colony, by Captain Edward Jorganson, the inspector of the mine. In his opinion, corroborated by that of the director, Mr Gifford, the Excelsior is a stone of the purest water, and is worth about £1,000,000 sterling. It is fully 3in in height, and nearly 3in in breadth, weighing about 971 carats or about 7oz troy. The colour of the Jagersfontein diamond is white with a very slight bluish tint, audits lustre is matchless. At the centre is a very small black spot, which experts consider will be easily removed in the cutting.
