THE DUNEDIN CUP.

So, after all, Ich Dieri failed to win the Dnnedin Cup, Buffering a five lengths' defeat- n 6 tho hands of Mr P. Butler's Liberator. With 7ft alb to carry, Mr Stead'd mare looked a "good thing" for tho race, and her defeat inuat have been ar.noying to both owner and trainer. I should say bhafc Ich Dien was one of bhe warmest favourites that have starter! for the Dunedin Cup, and the only excuse wo have to hand for her downfall 13 that; if tho daughter of St. George had been ridden .liflerently, she would have been close up if not in tho front at; the finish. Liberator, the winner, was purchased for 50()gs by one of Mr P. Butler's patrona after he had unexpectedly won the last New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase. Previous to that he was brained by M. Gojdger. and he was a well-known and consistent performer on the flat. When Liberator was trained by P.. Ray hia wins included the Ashburton and Palmeratnn Cup*. Bought by Mr Walker, of Reef ton, Jio made a great name for himself by his performances when taken to the West Coast. Liberator is by Betrayer, from Diaua, whose pedigree is somewhat obecure. The following is a list of past winners of the Dunedin Cup. 2 nailes and a distance:—
