The Vanderbilt Millions.
The late Mr Vanderbilb lefb abou^ £40,000,000 sterling ab his death, and it ia estimated that the fortune has increased by nearly 75 per cent, since. The money is almost entirely invested in railroad securities, and in many eases those securities have risen enormously in value. Jueb ab the present moment there may be a depreciation in coma instances, but taking the whole mass they have risen greatly in value; while it is to be recollected that the money was invested ab very high rates—it is said over 6 per cent., and that the members of the family spend only a small portion of their income, the greater parb being reinvested. It is estimated now thab Cornelius Vanderbilb, who is the hoad of the family, is worth aboub £30,000,000 Bterling, that W. K. Vanderbilt, whose purchase of Reading securities lately made such a sensation in the market), is worth about £25.000,000 sterling, ond thab tho two vnunger brothers are worth about £5,000,000 sterling each. If these estimates are at all nearly correct, the four brothers are worth £65,000.000 sterling, and it will be recollected that the sisters have each about £2,000,000 sterling. Even allowing for a great deal of exaggeration, ib will be understood why the Valderbilts are such a power in the railway market. Mr ARtor. who is also reputed to be worth £30,000.000 sterling, has hia meney in houses and land.—'Statist.'
