(BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

Mr Maxwell states that he did not apply for compensation before the determination of the Cabinet was arrived at. He was offered but refused compensation on Saturday before he was actually aware he was nob to bo ret&inod. He and Mr Hannay received letters stating that their services would not be required, late on Saturday. Mr Maxwell then applied for and obtained compensation. The Commissioners' engagement terminated yesterday, not on the 27th, as is gonerally sapposed. They had, therefore, only 48 hours' notice.
