ALLEGED LONG FIRM.

Chief Detective Grack and Detective Chrystal la-it evening arrested upon warrant two men at a boarding houae iv Nelsongtreot. They gave the names of James Millerand B'rank Smith, otherwise known an Shynn, and abated that they were Prussians. The charge upon which they were arrestetl was that they did unlawfully, fraudulently and deceitfully conspire and agree to cheat and defruud of certaiu goods and chattels Messrs W. McArthur and Co., John Trenwith, and Abbott, Owen ond Co., on the 17th of January. The prisoners were possessed of considerable property, 80sovereigns being found upon onaof them, while the detectives recovered at the Railway Station portmanteaux and luggage, cases containing drapery, boots and other goods. On one prisoner was also found a passage ticket by the s.s. Talune. The prisoners appeared at the Police Court this morning, before Messrs A. Clements and J. McLachlan, Justices, when Sergeant Gamble aeked for a remand for one week, and stated that the prisoners were su&pectad of what was usually known as a " long firm." Others were implicated in the matter, a third prisoner having been arrested at W;iitara. Mr J. O'Meagher appeared for both the accused, and asked that bail should bo allowed. This was opposed by Sergeant Gamble, who said that a quantity of goods had not yot been recovered, and if the prisoners wore allowed bail, it might militate against justice-

Mr O'Meagher said this was mere suspicion, and should not bo allowed to causo the prisoners to be refused bail. If the men were let out on bail no doubt, they would, be "shadowed" so carefully that even if they had goods planted ib would be impossible to Bpirit them away. Sergeant Gamble said perhaps the men had other confederates. The Bench decided to grant the remand for oue week and refused bail.
